Secret Path week/Walk for Wenjack
Secret Path week occurs every year from October 17th - 22nd. It is a national movement commemorating the legacies of Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack. To honour this legacy, DRBS will participate in our own Walk for Wenjack Wednesday, October 25th. This is a meaningful event where our school community will come together to walk in memory of Chanie Wenjack, a young Indigenous boy who tragically lost his life while trying to escape a Canadian residential school. This is a beautiful reminder that all children matter. Every unique culture, language, and heritage is honoured in our school.
This event connects to many of our curricular outcomes including the following:
Grade 1 – Social Studies: Develop age-appropriate behaviour for social involvement as responsible citizens contributing to their community.
Grade 2 – Social Studies: Participate in activities that enhance their sense of belonging within their school and community.
Grade 3 – Social Studies: Demonstrate an awareness of and interest in the beliefs, traditions and customs of groups and communities other than their own.
Grade 4 – Social Studies: Recognize how stories of people and events provide multiple perspectives on past and present events.
Grade 5 – Wellness: Examine how life experiences can shape understanding over time.
Grade 6 – Wellness: Involvement in a variety of activities can provide opportunities for personal development.
