Dear DRBS families,

Our last week together!

Here is what is coming up.

Monday June 24 – Rainbow Day

In honour of Pride Month and to support 2SLGBTQ+ students in our community and around our country, we will celebrate Rainbow Day on Monday, June 24th!

Rainbow Day is a day of acceptance, inclusion, and advocacy. We wish for all students to feel safe, respected, and cared for in their community, and Rainbow Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of being kind and accepting to all people.

Students of all ages deserve to have their unique families and identities represented positively, so let's be allies and wear rainbow colours on Monday!

Wednesday June 26 – parents can view report cards online. Please note these are only available until July 26, 2024. If you need a paper copy please print it before the deadline.

Goodbyes

Please join us in congratulating Ms. Evans who will be moving into a leadership position at Catherine Nichols Gunn School. She has been an exceptional part of our school and while we miss her, we wish her all the best!

Mrs. Calder will be joining the Richmond School staff as a full-time grade 1 teacher. We are excited for this opportunity for her and know they are lucky to have her. Ms. Calder has taught many students as she has been here since the school opened and we will miss her lots!

School Council

There will be some exciting changes coming to the DRBS playground this summer! By the fall we will have:

- A large rope climbing web structure (to replace the end-of-life small playground)

- 3 basketball nets

- Paved area for painted line games and future gaga ball court

Timeline and Background:

Fall 2017 - Large space-themed playground built with Development Association fundraising money and grants. Plan to add an Outdoor Learning Space once more money can be raised.

Summer 2022 - Phase 1 of Outdoor Learning Space was completed: rock ampitheater, medicine wheel garden, mural wall, pathways, trees, shrubs and grass. Cost was $100,000, which came from DRBS Development Association, including ongoing fundraising since 2017, Stars Gala and Legacy Stars.

Fall 2023 - DRBS was awarded a grant of $125,000 through the Government of Alberta - Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) which must be matched by our school to enhance outdoor learning and play. We were able to apply the $100,000 spent in 2022, and will be spending an additional $25,000 of our funds so as to maximize the grant. The grant expires in spring 2025, meaning we only have the summer 2024 building season to utilize it.

Jan 2024 - School admin and families were consulted in meetings and through a survey sent out regarding Phase 2 of the Outdoor Learning Space / Playground, to be built during summer 2024. The small playground was identified as past its lifespan (it pre-dated the school) and flagged for removal by CBE; CBE will cover the cost of removing the old playground only. Feedback was gathered and it was decided that the small playground would be replaced with a large rope climbing web structure. Basketball nets were asked for by many and will be included. A gaga ball court was also requested, but was out of budget so will be slated for future developments (hopefully the following year). The paving required for the future gaga ball court and painted line games will be included.

July 8 2024 - Small playground fenced-off and removed.

Mid Summer 2024 - Paving and basketball nets installed.

Week of Aug 26 2024 - Rope climbing web structure installed.

Last Fun Lunch - Our last Fun Lunch Day is coming up on Thursday, June 27th!   This is our final day of school, sports day and a half day!

Our children will spend the morning outside for sports day before returning to their classes at approximately 11:30am to say good bye to their teacher and classmates.  If you would like to order lunch to take home, to a buddies place or hang out after school is finished with your friends and families for a Subway picnic lunch feel free to do so! Might be a nice way to say good bye before leaving for the summer!  Your Parent Council will also have Farewell Happy Summer sign at the front of the school so stick around and take advantage of this photo opportunity!  Please go to www.healthyhunger.ca to order.   Thank you for all your support of Fun Lunches and the fundraising it brings into the school!    Have a great summer break everyone!
