Week-At-A-Glance December 11 - December 15, 2023

Dear DRBS Families

Gratitude focus for the week:

““There is a pleasure in the pathless woods” – Lord Byron

Spend more time thinking about a part of your life that has yet to be planned out. Remind yourself that to have an adventure ahead is a gift, and your life is full of possibility.

Thank You/Reminders

  • Please be extra careful when driving around the school and park in appropriate areas. This has been a dangerous week for students, staff and volunteers.
  • No book exchange until the winter break as we are using the LC for other activities
  • Grades 5 & 6 will be participating in the Mobile Escape residency this week. Parents please watch for communication from your teachers about coming to try and escape!
  • Thank you for your generous donations to The Totes of Hope for The Alex!

Holiday Giving

Christmas Store at Catherine Nichols Gunn School

Every year at Catherine Nichols Gunn, they open our Winter Store in the last week of school before our winter break. Classes will be invited to the grade 6 classroom for students to purchase items as gifts for their families. The items are gently used, and the purchase price of each item is whatever kids can afford.  The collected proceeds are used to support other charitable acts throughout the school year. No student will be turned away from this event regardless of ability to pay.

This event provides students an opportunity to experience the joy of giving. Students will only be allowed to purchase items for their immediate family and will be asked to refrain from purchasing for friends and teachers. If students are not sure who to purchase for, a personal shopper (a grade 6 leadership student) will help them shop for items and the items will be wrapped by the grade 6 students and volunteers and then delivered to students to take home on December 21, 2022.

To make this possible, families from Dr. Roberta Bondar have a drive for gently used items to be donated and then "purchased" by students at Catherine Nichols Gunn as gifts for their family members. Children choose items for their parents and siblings only. The following items are quickly chosen as children are most eager to give gifts to their parents and may provide some ideas of the types of items to donate:

Dishtowels, placemats, dishes, small appliances, utensils, candles, flashlights, screwdrivers and other tools, soap dishes,  home decorations and accent items, plant holders,

ladies and men's unsized clothing items (scarves, gloves, hats), costume jewelry,

For their siblings, children like to give toys, puzzles, books, and games.

Additionally, as this is a gift-giving event, any additional wrapping paper you might have would be appreciated- especially neutral wrapping papers as some children will not be gifting as part of a Christmas event.

Hug and Go Reminder - Hi parent community of Dr. Roberta Bondar School. During the past week there have been some close calls during the morning drop off. Please take a minute to read through this important information.

Hug and Go is run entirely by volunteers to ensure the safety of students during periods of traffic congestion. Please be patient, courteous and treat our volunteers with respect. A “good morning” is always appreciated too 😊! For the safety of our kids and everyone, please respect the following guidelines when using the Hug and Go services:

- Do not U-turn in front of the Hug and Go area right after dropping your child off (or ever in a playground zone).

- Do not drop off your child before or right at the crosswalk and do not block the crosswalk.

- Wait for the volunteer instructions to drive up to the front of the lane when appropriate.

- Wait for the volunteers to open your doors.

Thank you for your attention to this. Our main priority is helping us all keep our children and school environment a safe place. If you have any questions please contact Miguel at drbshugandgo@gmail.com
